Bridal shower cake

One of our dear friends had her bridal shower last Saturday, and I did her cake as my gift to her. It was fun to do. Her colors are red, black and silver. Everything was edible. It was frosted in buttercream with fondant/gumpaste bow, ribbon and box lids.

This was the cake board. I "stamped" the word love into each corner.

This is an "up-close" view of the bottom cake with it's silver dragees (which are technically edible---just hard).

Summer Missions Trip

Jim asked me to post this here. This is a letter that we sent out to several people today. We know that some may read it here who did not receive it in the mail, and that the Lord may put this upon your heart. Thank you for reading it.

Dear Friends and family,

We are excited to share with you an opportunity the Lord has opened for us for this summer. As most of you know, we had the incredible privilege of going to Arequipa, Peru in 2007 as assistant leaders for a medical mission’s trip with a group of college students. On that trip, we saw over 3,500 patients and hundreds were saved. The co-leaders of that team, Fred and Corinne Carlson, have become dear friends of ours. Since that trip they have had a desire to develop yearly medical mission’s trips that includes both college students (mostly nursing and pre-med students) and medical professionals. This desire has been realized a year sooner than they thought it would be when the missionaries that we worked with in Peru asked for another team to come and hold another clinic.

The trip will be from July 1-15 with a medical clinic as its primary focus. We desire to go and share the precious gospel of Jesus Christ with the Arequipenos. We fell in love with these dear people two years ago and are excited to return. We also desire to be a blessing to the missionary families that we have come to know, including a young lady (nursing student) who went with us in 2007 and met a young missionary during our second week there. Bekah and Jeremy were married last May after she graduated, and they have just arrived in Arequipa as missionaries. They have been given the responsibility of organizing this clinic on their end and working directly with the team.

For a couple of months, we have been fervently praying that we would be able to go with the team as assistant leaders. The Lord used that trip two years ago to deepen our burden for foreign missions, and we believe that He desires to use us on these short term trips each summer. A team of doctors, nurses, a pharmacist, as well as pre-med and nursing students is currently being assembled. However, at this time, the team size and finances cannot support free passage for us as assistant leaders like we had prayed. Therefore, believing it to be the Lord’s will that we go, we must raise $5,000 as our support for this trip. We know that the time for raising this amount is short, but we know that our God is great. We are trusting Him to do what we cannot do. We know that He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20).

The most important request we have is for your prayers. Would you please pray that God will continue to provide the team members that we need to hold this clinic. Also, pray that many souls would be saved as we go. And, then we ask for prayer for provision and protection.

Secondly, we do need the support so that we can go. Would you consider giving so that we can go? The amount is needed in two installments (April 1st/May 1st). If God places this on your heart, all tax-deductible donations can be sent to:

Weekend getaway

With Jim in grad school, life has been crazy. His classes last 5 weeks with a week off in between classes. On his last weekend off, we headed to Destin (45 miles away) and spent a very relaxing weekend as a family. On Saturday, we went to the Gulfarium which has dolphins, sea lions, penguins, sharks, etc. They have a couple of shows. We all enjoyed it very much.

Amelia loved the view from our hotel room. We were on the 4th floor, and you could see the ocean across the street.

Fall festival

We went to a local fall festival. Matthew enjoyed being able to wear his spiderman costume that he got for his birthday.

Matthew requested a Spiderman cake for his birthday party, of course.

One of the nurses that I work with requested a cake for her mother's birthday. She told me that her mom loves to cook and so I made her this cake. Everything on this cake is edible, from the frying pan to the salt/pepper shakers to the hand towel. The "floor" was hand-painted fondant.

This was made for one of my fellow nursing instructors.

Matthew's Birthday

Matthew was soooo excited to turn five last week and to have a party. It was a lot of fun. We went to a park and the weather was just gorgeous. Matthew had a spiderman themed party.

Jim's mom got Matthew a spiderman costume, which he quickly changed into at the party. I was busy doing other things, so I have no idea WHERE he changed (seeing that we were outdoors at a park).

It has been a while since I have "done some caking" as Jim calls it. Here are two from today. We had a ladies' brunch at church today and I had volunteered to bring a centerpiece for one of the tables. It was a garden themed brunch. I had seen a picture of a cake that I wanted to try, so cake was my centerpiece. Everything on top of the cake is edible, made out of a sugar paste. This centerpiece attracted way more attention then I imagined. I then sent the cake home with our pastor's wife for the family to eat. The second cake was for my office mates' birthday party.

Build-A-Bear

Last weekend, we went to a birthday party at Build-A-Bear where Amelia and Matthew were able to make their own teddy bear. The kids had a blast.

They were given a heart to put in their bear. In this picture they are putting it to their ears so the bear will be a good listenener.

Matthew had fun pushing the pedal so that "Isaiah" could be stuffed. (He picked the name.)

After filling and fluffing the bears, we picked out clothes for them. Matthew was very bothered that the budget didn't allow for shoes for his bear.

And, of course, the first thing Amelia did was undress "teddy." Silly people---they use velcro for the clothes.

On Thursday, Matthew's class at school had Parent Day. It was an hour of seeing what he does at school. He started the group by leading us in the "pledge" and the national anthem. He also got to participate in other songs and questions. Here are some of the pictures from that event.

Kidnapping

I kidnapped Jim last night. Since it was just for one night, I wanted to stay close. We stayed at a bed-and-breakfast in a Victorian home downtown. We actually had what was called "the Carriage House" out behind the house. There was a jacuzzi out our french doors and a pool, as well. The pool was pretty nippy, but was refreshing after some time in the jacuzzi. (I meant to bring the camera to take some pictures of the place, but it got left behind.) It was just nice to get away from kids and stresses of every day life before Jim starts his second CJ grad class. And, by the way, I am so proud of him. He got an A in his first class.

On Tuesday, Matthew and I went to the beach with a college girl and her fiance. Bekah was on our team to Peru: and while in Peru, she met a single missionary guy who was also there with a team. Bekah and Jeremy are now engaged and will be married in May. Then they will head to Peru in January of '09, when they are done with deputation. Jeremy was in town for a visit and Bekah wanted pictures at the beach. It was in the 50's and very windy. Although it was cold, the waves were so majestic. Matthew had a blast.

Mexico Trip

As most everyone knows, we took a team to Peru last summer on a 2 week missions trip. This June we will be leading a team of 12 (14 total) to southern Mexico for two weeks. We will be working with PCC grad missionaries Chris and Elizabeth Robertson. They live in Ixtlan del Rio, a town of less than 30,000. Our team is made up of 5 nursing students, one RN (who graduated last year and went to Peru with us), and 6 of miscellaneous majors. We will hold two one-day clinics. They will be focused more on screening and wellness teaching, as there will only be 2 RN's on the trip. We are very excited about this opportunity for ministry in Mexico.
